2020 has been a momentous year. Catastrophic natural disasters including the bushfires, followed by COVID-19 has separated many young people in Victoria from their friends and outdoor spaces.
They have spent months in front of screens and need some time in the open air.
The Outdoor Education Foundation has developed a 3-day program to provide disadvantaged young people with the opportunity to meet new people, reconnect with their peers and have some fun in the outdoors!
Young people will be referred through their strong network of community organisation referral partners.
All will be between 14-16 years of age and identified as a young person experiencing disadvantage, who has been impacted by COVID-19 social isolation and distancing and who would benefit from support.
The Benefits
Young people on the program will experience a range of social and emotional support to successfully recover and regenerate from their COVID-19 experiences in a constructive and future-focused way. Expected benefits include:
- Diminished feelings of isolation and discrimination
- Enhanced feelings of social connection
- Development of social confidence and social competence
- Increased capacity for community participation and desire to practice altruism
